The Boston Athletic Association and adidas began
sponsorship of the Mayor's Cup, elevating the meet's
profile within Boston Parks and Recreation's schedule
of events. Five years after her first Mayor's Cup
victory in 1992, Kathy Franey convincingly won this
year's race, running a wire-to-wire victory and
crossing the finish line with a time of 16:22. Franey,
now representing Nike International, set the existing
meet record over Marie McMahon, formerly of Providence
College, who finished second in 16:42. Former Princeton
University All-American Kristen Beaney, of ASICS,
who finished one second later was third place in
16:43. In the women's team competition ASICS Club
East based in Pennsylvania claimed first place (1:29:36)
with a twenty-one second margin of victory over
the Central Mass Striders (1:29:57). Men's defending
champion, Silah Misoi, of Life University, retained
his title, finishing first in 22:53. As in the women's
race, Misoi's time is considered the Mayor's Cup
meet record for the course, which has remained unchanged
to the present (2002). Olympic steeplechaser Robert
Gary, representing Nike, finished second in 23:04.
Sammy Nyamongo, also of Life University, was third
in 23:12. Team New Balance (1:57:46) won the men's
team competition defeating runner-up Life University
(1:57:56) by ten seconds.
