America SCORES New England is a force of monumental change in the realm of language arts, physical fitness, and service learning for Boston Public School students. Aligned with district and statewide language arts and physical education curriculum frameworks, SCORES’ after school out-of-school time programs address the rising obesity and faltering literacy levels prevalent among urban youth.

Through our gender-specific soccer leagues, performance-based poetry workshops, and community-based service learning programs, the SCORES program combines the proven benefits of team sports - increased physical activity, self-esteem, team pride, and good sportsmanship; with an onsite academic program that builds critical literacy skills; and a service learning component that encourages students to become involved in bettering their communities. All students are required to participate in all elements of the SCORES program, with teamwork as a unifying value.

Working in and around schools, where children learn best and are most likely to be able to participate, our school-based programming significantly enhances access to the very supports that our young participants often cannot receive at home. Certified Boston public school teachers serve as program coaches, professional trainings educate our coaches on our nationally-developed curricula, and management staff provides program oversight. Through effective alternative education experiences, urban youth learn fundamental skills needed to lead full and productive lives. Ultimately, by inspiring children to develop active, healthy lifestyles and to relate to their world through language and creative arts, SCORES is a powerful impetus for heightening youths’ personal aspirations.
